Start with the relationship

An enquiry, appraisal or show-house conversation may be the beginning of a relationship that develops over months. A client can like your approach and still need time before making a decision. Your role is to remain useful while their circumstances take shape.

The Wednesday Edge describes follow-up as an investment in relationships. A short check-in can help you understand what has changed and what the person needs next. That gives you a better reason to reconnect than simply asking whether they are ready to transact.

Give every conversation a next step

At the end of a useful conversation, agree on an appropriate next contact. A buyer might want an update when a suitable home becomes available. An owner may welcome a new market appraisal later in the year. Record that reason and a reminder in your CRM or diary.

Keep enough context to make the next conversation personal. If a client is waiting for a work transfer, school decision or change in family circumstances, remembering that detail helps you ask a relevant question. Let the client guide how often and through which channel you stay in touch.

Make the routine manageable

Choose a small block of time that you can protect each week. Start with past clients, recent valuations and people who previously said “not yet”. Review what you promised and complete those commitments before seeking a new list of prospects.

Useful contact might include a brief market update, a relevant listing or a simple check-in. Keep the conversation focused on the person. Ask whether their plans have changed and listen to what would be helpful now. If they do not want further contact, respect that preference.

Try this over the next seven days

Choose five people you have been meaning to reconnect with. For each one, write down why you are contacting them and what could make the conversation useful. After speaking, record any agreed next step.

At the end of the week, review whether you completed the calls and kept your promises. The purpose is a dependable habit that you can sustain. A relationship may lead to business later, but useful service has value today.
